Type 2 Time Trial Recap

It all began with an email on May 31 from Eric Wilk. Subject Line:

“Bandit Run Idea.”

Hey Brent,

I was trying to think of ideas for creative bandit runs, and I wanted to get your thoughts.

So what about doing a vert challenge, but with a mystery element?

40 days and about 25 email exchanges later, Eric knocked the cover off the ball in his Bandit Race Directing debut.

The Concept: Runners have 60 minutes to gain as much vert as they can. Most elevation gained wins, and runners choose their own destiny when it comes to the course / pace / distance.

When Eric sent runners off to suffer at 8:00am, they scattered like mice, determined to outwit their fellow subjects in this cruel experiment.

The most popular spot was Water Hill, where Type Two’ers conquered the Sunset hill, scooped and climbed the Orkney bowl, and even wandered into the graveyard in search of a grave when the suffering hit type 2 status. This is where Erin Finn made her bones, as well as Xiaofeng Wang, Eric Anderson, Matthew O’Meara, Jack Miller, Javiar Pescador, Dina Shtull, Hayato Shimizu, and Jon Trevathan.

Other runners elected to tackle the Arb hill, favoring the iconic 1k climb that has been known to chisel the most seasoned endurance freaks. Working as a pack, Calli, Michelle, Jane, and Mikel got their fill of gain, but capped out around 718’ due to the long journey getting there. With Michelle and Calli clocking the same elevation gain, distance was tiebreaker, and Calli’s GPS came up with .02 extra miles.

The most innovative strategy of the day belonged to Dan Hughes. A recent inductee of the Centruy Club, the Huron 100 finisher ran the most efficient race, and scored a 4th place Male finish. This dirtbag hit the trails, and squeezed 1,211 ft. of gain in 5.16 miles!
